Americans take to road but cautious after gas shock

Reuters -- GRAPEVINE, Texas (Reuters) - Robert Neal will take to the road this Independence Day holiday the same as millions of other Americans. But there's a difference in their road-trip ritual this Fourth of July.

The price of gasoline, while down sharply from last year's peak, means the 74-year-old owner of a motor home may not venture as far as he has in the past.

Standing in shorts and sneakers outside his RV at a campground in Grapevine, a lakeside town near Dallas, Neal said he and his wife remained unsure where to go next. "The gas price as it is now, it's a maybe, maybe," he said.

with that, you could unhitch the trailer, drive the car and don't have a 4 - 6 mpg monster.

why the big fat RVs weren't made with more economical features, including engine's mpg, is still beyond me. And what ever happened to the aerodynimcs of an Airstream?

nothing wrong with sticking around closer to home - how many of us have really explored the areas around us. Let's face it, most of us want to see exotic places. Time to rethink!

We were out on the highway yesterday. The road was packed with cars, trucks, trailers and RV's. Traffic was at a crawl there were so many vehicles on the road.

With the 4th of July holiday upon us, I was surprised to see prices at the pump remain stagnant. At some stations, they actually dropped by a few pennies. We should expect prices to hover between $2.50 and $3.00 a gallon through the end of the year, if we're lucky.

Some of ya all might not be to far off the mark. I've been wondering myself how long it'll be before Gas and Oil will be Rationed as during WW2.

Some will think thats nuts but to clue u in then why is Wisconsin one of the 1st States to plant a Radio, GPS type Chip on the back of our drivers License. They were goin' to start this in May 08' but put it off for a year.

Just as on the National Front they want you to start carryin' a National ID with all your Personal Information contained in that little black strip on the back.

Some of ya'all still think NAFTA was a Trade Agreement also but its really an agreement to bring Mexico, Canada and the US under 1 Flag, Government and Currency.

Think thats crazy, a new computer has been developed that can do 1 thousand trillion calculations per second and can store 1 million hundered thousand bits of information on every man, woman & child in the world.

Whats all this got to do with the price of gas? Go back to the first paragraph!!!

Like most 4th of Julys', stay home and find entertainment in the local neighborhood.

Everyone who says the price of oil is too high is not practicing what they preach because I still see every third vehicle on the road is a pick-up truck driving 10 miles per hour faster than the speed limit and getting horrible gas mileage, but STILL DOING IT. The price will only come down when ALL people realize their wasteful habits keep the price of gasoline up.

If you don't feel you need to conserve, quit complaining about the price of gas. As for me, I don't give a damn since I drive an electric car and just fly by those stupid gas stations.

Some people will just never learn.

They will continue to use gasoline unnecessarily.

They seem to be oblivious to the fact that the more gas that is used the more the price will be.

Why is it necessary to 'take to the road' at every holiday weekend?

Most seem to take that outlook. My son & family came back from a 10 day stay at Myrtle Beach in their motorhome. He said he would rather not be on the road the holiday week. Hes got more guts than me, I'd be afraid they might rase the price of gas to much for me to get back home again...I also advised him to go early as the rate the gas was going up then, he might be thinking twice about a 600 mile trip to the Beach....
