.US gas stations: Stay BP or change name to Amoco?

Associated Press -- Harry R. Weber, AP Business Writer, On Friday July 30, 2010, 8:12 am EDT
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- BP gas station owners across the country are divided over whether the oil giant stained by its handling of the Gulf spill should rebrand U.S. outlets as Amoco or another name as part of its effort to repair the company's badly damaged reputation.

Some who have seen their sales plunge because of protests say BP has already sought a fresh start by naming an American to replace its gaffe-prone British CEO, so why not change the name on gas stations marquees as a further symbol of that culture shift.

Others worry that a name change is a big deal that is risky given all the marketing dollars already spent building up the BP brand. They also believe a successful turnaround with the existing brand

No need to change the name -- just drop the price of gas at the pump and I bet people will return.

When Nissan switched the US market from the Datsun brand to the Nissan brand, they found people (at least for a while) had a higher opinion of the Datsun brand.

Chevron, once they reacquired the right to use the Texaco name, turned around and rolled out the Texaco name again. BP could do worse than turning around and going to the Amoco name, but I'd predict the stations who rebranded to BP a few years ago will not be happy to pay to change back to Amoco.

It's unfortunate that people are taking out their anger and frustrations on the station owners who had nothing to do with BP's disaster. It's guilt by association. But when people feel helpless to do something to correct an injustice, they will do many emotional acts that may not help themselves or the situation.

Around Kansas City, the BP signs are oval so they could fit pylons designed for the Amoco Torch and Oval.

saw a story that the owner had a 12 year lease and he couldn't change to something other than BP. The driver morons punishing station owners need to get a clue
